Alleged Judges: CJN, NBA, SANs In Crucial Meeting

A high profile delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) representatives has been mandated to meet with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed on Thursday to fashion a roadmap out of the crisis rocking the nation’s judiciary.

The high-stakes “courtesy visit” to the CJN is aimed at finding a meeting ground between the key stakeholders in the justice sector over the controversial raids on some judges’ residences.

It was unclear at press time whether the delegation will be led by the Attorney-General & Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) who is the Leader of the Nigerian Bar. Malami attended last weekend’s meeting.

Impeccable sources close to the BOSAN meeting which held at the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School last Saturday has been directed to request the CJN to ask the affected judges to step aside in the interest of justice and the legal profession.

According to one of our sources who attended the meeting, “This is not an indictment on the affected judges but merely to allow the process run its course.”

Though some BOSAN members at the explosive and well-attended meeting condemned the manner the ‘sting operation’ was carried out, arguing that it should have been conducted in a more dignified way, it was resolved that the deed had been done and that what is required now is to plot the way forward.

BOSAN also resolved to impress on the NJC to “as much as possible understand that criminal matters are within the purview of prosecutorial agencies, and to cooperate with the agencies to enable prosecution instead of shielding the judges.”

The influential body of senior lawyers also resolved that there is an “urgent need” to amend the 1999 Constitution “especially as it pertains to disciplinary matters.” This is to cure the current situation where lawyers are excluded when disciplinary matters against judges are discussed at NJC.
