Arrest of Judges: Attempt to Cow Judiciary-NJC

The National Judicial Council has condemned the raid on some judges’ houses by the operatives of the Department of State Service over the weekend and the subsequent arrest of the judicial officers.

In a statement issued yesterday by the acting Director, Information, Soji Oye, the NJC described the treatment handed to the arrested judicial officers as a threat to the independence of the judiciary.

The NJC says it is an “attempt by the DSS to humiliate and cow the judiciary.”

Earlier, the Nigeria Bar Association had condemned the attitude of the DSS as it called on President Muhammadu Buhari to caution his security agencies.

Nevertheless, President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that his government  wiould continue his campaign against corruption.

Speaking through the Minister of Infomation and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, the Federal Government said that the arrest of the judges was not an attempt to intimidate the judiciary but a fight against corrupt practices.
